Artistic Practice
Lok Kan CHEUNG is a Hong Kong performer and theatre-maker known for her precise, poetic physical performance and cross-cultural dramaturgy. Her works integrate object theatre, puppetry, movement-based storytelling, and archive-rooted performance, often engaging with themes of exile, memory, and transformation. Her artistic journey began in Hong Kong, where she played an active role in the independent theatre scene. She worked as a puppeteer and story writer for productions by Make Friends with Puppet Theatre Company, and collaborated as a performer and playwright with various companies, including Theatre Fanatico, Dance Art Hong Kong, and Amity Drama Club. These early projects laid the foundation for her long-term engagement with visual storytelling and interdisciplinary performance. She trained at the École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, completing both the Acting Programme and the Laboratoire d’Étude du Mouvement, a research-based module focused on space, rhythm, and physical dramaturgy. She continued developing at the École Philippe Gaulier, studying clown, theatre performance, play, and masks play She also holds a diploma from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), School of Drama, where she trained in acting, voice, and directing. She studies object theatre with Mots de Tête (formerly the Philippe Genty Company), deepening her approach to visual dramaturgy and silent narrative. Additionally, she studied traditional Javanese masks and dance with Supana Pono Wiguno, artistic director of the Yogyakarta Palace in Indonesia, an experience that informed her movement language and cultural sensitivity.
Organising & Curatorial Work
Alongside her performance work, Lok Kan CHEUNG has established herself as a cultural organiser and curator with a long-term commitment to intercultural exchange, diaspora storytelling, and public memory. She is the founding president of CUBE [C³], a Paris-based association promoting Hong Kong arts in Europe. Since 2022, she has served as the founding curator and chief organiser of the Hong Kong Film Festival in Paris (Festival du Film Hongkongais de Paris)—the city’s only dedicated platform for Hong Kong cinema. In partnership with the City Hall of Paris (Mairie de Paris), the festival has expanded its reach across regions, including a 2024 extension in Annecy. That same year, Cheung curated Hong Kong: Échos D’Une Ville, the first Hong Kong-themed cultural programme in Annecy, co-organised with L’Auditorium Seynod and supported by her residency at ESAAA. The programme included a cinema series, her performance Voyage Expiré, and an exhibition (Échos de la Cité Cachée) featuring artists such as Greg Girard, Pen So, Hoi Chiu, and Taejune Ryu. Her curatorial work is grounded in cultural activism and transnational collaboration. Past initiatives include community-oriented arts programming in Hong Kong, such as the Tai Po Youth Arts Festival (2016–2017), as well as intercultural youth workshops in Italy, including Gioventù Murata: Kowloon Walled City x Siena (2018) and Viaggio in Occidente (2019), developed in collaboration with Topi Dalmata. She has also contributed to international productions such as HÉ – L’HARMONIE by Dance Company (Hong Kong), where she served as production assistant for the Paris station. Her curatorial vision is grounded in the belief that storytelling, when supported by structure, can serve as resistance, remembrance, and regeneration.
